The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) partnered with GitHub to expand on the efforts of federal initiative, ConnectHome, by offering a workshop to youth ages 13-18 residing at Mar Vista Gardens and Nickerson Gardens. More than 80 youth participated in one of the four 4-hour sessions offered throughout the weekend. Led by GitHub and conjunction with site staff and respective Boys and Girls Clubs at the site of each housing development, activities were abuzz throughout the day.

“Today we are here with GitHub and we are building computers from scratch and we learned about coding,” said 17 year old Connor. “I think today’s community is a lot more tech-based so you need to know this stuff. I think computer science is very interesting and it’s a skill we need to have to get jobs today.”

GitHub employees also provided guidance on college access as well as career pathways.

“We want to teach them about collaboration,” explained Toya East from GitHub Social Impact Team. “Regardless of your background, we want them to have the tools to be successful in life.”

Starting out with a team building activity, participants untied themselves from the human knot. In establishing this collaborative and supportive space, they learned about the components of a computer and then assembled a computer device that they were able to take home. The devices were sponsored by Kano, which preinstalled programs and applications that the youth can use to further build their computing and coding skills that could open them up to and prepare them for a future career that leverages technology.
