The 15th Annual Mayoral Housing, Transportation and Jobs Summit took place at UCLA on Friday October 28, 2016 at UCLA. The Housing AuthorityPresident and CEO Doug Guthrie served as a panelist on LA’s housing needs: increasing market rate, workforce and affordable housing production in Los Angeles.

During the panel presentation Douglas Guthrie provided updates regarding the Jordan Downs redevelopment, talked about an increasing need for affordable housing, stressed the importance of passing the Proposition HHH and preserving the existing housing stock for multifamily as well as homeless population.

“Proposition HHH is going to be providing the principal capital that will allow for an expansion of the new development of housing for the homeless population and permanent supportive housing which I think everyone agrees is a better of all solutions. If HHH goes through, the Housing Authority is prepared to commit 5,000 long term Section 8 units to underwrite the support over the next 5 years for the city’s development goals of a 1,000 units a year,” said Guthrie.

Other members of the panel included: Brad Cox, Senior Managing Director of Trammell Crow Company, David Hart, President & CEO of Steinberg, Ralph McLaughlin, Chief Economist of Trulia, Ann Sewill, Vice President, Housing & Economic Opportunity, California Community Foundation, and Tom Warren, Executive Managing Director of Holland Development.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, President of LA City Council Herb Wesson, State Assembly Member Richard Bloom and LA City Council Member Mike Bonin were present at the summit. HACLA Commissioners Lucelia Hooper and Daria Nuñes were also in attendance.

The annual summit provides an opportunity for government, public and private sector leaders come together to address major issues and come up with solutions that can shape LA’s future. The main topics of discussion during the summit included: the future of transportation in Los Angeles and the future for workforce housing in California. As LA’s population increase, so does the need for affordable housing, stagnant wages and a great need for adequate public transit and residential parking. Phillip Washington, CEO of Metro stressed the significance of bringing transportation and mobility opportunities to the most disadvantaged parts of Los Angeles and coming up with solutions to reduce traffic congestion.
