The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) celebrated the grand opening of a little library located in the management office at San Fernando Gardens public housing development in Pacoima. The library offers over 200 new books to children between the ages 0 to 8, and aims to promote early literacy and encourage the love of reading.

HACLA’s President and CEO, Douglas Guthrie conducted a story time for 20 children ages 3-5 to celebrate the occasion. The children were actively engaged and enjoyed the book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear”.

“The Housing Authority wants to encourage the wonderful things about learning and education and provide children that live at the public housing sites the opportunities and access to educational resources. Small kids that were here today, were joyful when they were reading books and that is what we want to see,” said Douglas Guthrie.

All children that visit the little library today will receive a free book as a gift. The books for the library were provided through FirstBook, donations from HACLA’s non-profit partner Baby2Baby as well as the local library.
