The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) hosted community wide events at Estrada Courts, drawing a crowd of residents, volunteers and community organizations.
Featuring a partnership with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and West Point Academy, thirty four youth participated in a day long Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshop. The participants started out the day learning about the key elements of robotics to ending the day applying what they learned in a friendly robotics competition. In teams, the youth programmed a robot to navigate a maze and demonstrated their robots for an audience of family, friends and judges.
Further engaging the community to tap into technology, HACLA facilitated the registration of low-cost internet with AT&T, which was announced at Estrada Courts by HUD Secretary, LA Mayor, AT&T President and HACLA CEO. In addition, HACLA engaged in the community through a Resource Fair. Partners hosting booths included Kids Progress, Inc., Jump Start, Los Angeles County Office of Education Early Childhood Education, Children's Institute, Inc., Los Angeles Public Library and I Can Afford College. These organizations provided valuable resources, activities and opportunities for HACLA Estrada Court residents.
